The Angouleme Festival is held every year at the end of January. That means it's winter. The tents are well heated... and busy. You see lots of attendees lugging their heavy coats around as well as bags of books!

This is one of the most elaborate booths at the show.... they have a wooden "book bar"... and extra chairs that were quite popular with tired attendees.
Several of the booths feature prints and posters like this:
At almost every booth, you'll see artists doing elaborate sketches for signings in the French style.
I liked the spiral display of books at this booth:
And this cute book about a cartoonists life with his dog "Dugly" had this wall of photos of someone dressed in as Dugly visiting famous sites in Paris.

We were pleased to welcome artist Craig Elliott to the Stuart Ng Books showroom on February 11th, to sign and sketch in his new book The Art of Craig Elliott.

Ronald Searle - a Legacy in Line

Remembering Ronald Searle (Mar 3 1920 - Dec 30, 2011). His "Paris Sketchbook" is just one of many examples of his popular work:

Here's a quote from John Walsh article in THE INDEPENDENT from Jan 4, 2012:

The main inspiration for Searle's view of human nature was his wartime incarceration in a Japanese POW camp and on the Siam-Burma Death Railway. Afflicted with malaria and ulcers, starving and close to death, he kept drawing his emaciated fellow prisoners, to leave behind a record of their experiences; he was obliged to hide them under the mattresses of those dying of cholera (the guards would not go near, for fear of infection). Most of the pictures are now in the Imperial War Museum.

Searle was immensely prolific in the 1950s and 1960s, drawing for scores of magazines including Punch, The New Yorker, Life and Holiday. His unmistakable figures, now in Edwardian garb, could be found in the credit sequence of the movies Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965) and Monte Carlo or Bust (1969) and he published several books of drawings – his favorites subjects were cats and the streets of Paris – over the next three decades.

Here at the blog we're still celebrating all the gifts of inspiration from December... and maybe an Alphabet theme for the New Year.

Dec 12th, we reached a milestone of 30,000 + all-time pageviews.. then topped it with 31,000 on Dec 22nd! From Dec 15th - 22nd, we've welcomed countries #90 - 95. On 12/29, country #96, Barbados.. 12/31 #97 Estonia. On Jan 4th -- #98 Albania and Jan 12th.. Kenya #99! We hit 100 with a visit from Cyprus on 1/13. Thank YOU so much for your interest!

We are a family run, very small business in Torrance, CA. Our bookstore is mostly mail order. We started in the era of old school hands-on bookselling, and we've survived the transition to the internet age. In addition to our website, we sell books at conventions & book fairs. Our niche is books on illustration, animation and comic art and our wonderful & loyal patrons are artists, students & collectors in these fields. Stuart travels here and abroad searching for great books and artists, including his annual trip to France to attend Europe's largest comic art festival. He doesn't speak or read French; he selects his inventory strictly for the art. I've been taking French lessons... so now I can order more than a ham & cheese sandwich at the cafes. When Stuart launched our business full-time in 1997, we had no idea we would become a world-wide resource for books in our field. When I married Stuart... a LONG time ago.. I had no idea I would also be marrying a small business.. (we didn't meet in business school).... but that's another story :)

18-year-old Ben Breedlove was an active teenager who loved life. Sadly, he passed away on Christmas from a final heart attack. He had a life-long heart condition and had cheated death 3 times before. He had many fans from his videos on You Tube. He shared his reflections on his life journey in this thoughtful message with his on-line fans not long before Christmas. In just a few minutes.. on a handful of flash cards.. he reveals an inspiring depth of character along with his amazing smile:

Highly regarded as a wildlife artist, Charles Livingston Bull (1874-1932) also worked as a taxidermist, including a stint at a Natural History Museum! His powerful images of wild animals in action were featured on government posters for the war effort, as well as national magazines and ad campaigns. For some time, I've been meaning to learn more about the artist George Ford Morris (1873-1960). He's best known for his equestrian art. These samples of his work are from Google Images...

The George Ford Morris story I heard that lingers with me is that most of his portraits of horses and dogs are of pets... specific animals that were obviously loved enough to have a work of art commissioned. You can read a short bio on Morris at www.Horseandhoundart.com

An author-artist who was a longtime favorite with the horsey set is the beloved CW Anderson (1891-1971).

For a certain generation of young readers, his "Billy and Blaze" books were the perfect introduction to riding as well as reading....

He also wrote stories with heroines and horses. His stories for young people were gentle tales that stressed kindness to animals and common sense in the face of fears and danger.

His images of horses were popular in the 1960s and 70s.... and often used in home decor.

He was American, but there is a wonderful page about him on a UK website you have to love called "Ponymadbooklovers" This page also features a large number of covers of many of his books. He's best known for his fiction for younger readers... but also non-fiction books about famous real life horses. He also had cartoons published in the New Yorker. If you aren't familiar with CW Anderson, give yourself a holiday gift of discovering his work. We have some titles in stock.. and many of his books are available in print.

There seems to be a theme developing for posts this month: the gift of inspiration. I get so excited when I see how artists are using their blogs to share their working process and what inspires them. The constant refrain I hear from the very best artists is that they are 1) always drawing and 2) always learning. Case in point, our friend William Stout, pictured here signing at our showroom:

The Blackwing 602 pencil .. Returns!

It's that time of year when gift item catalogs are showing up in the mail... and this page caught my eye:

In case you've never heard of it, one of the most beloved instruments in the artist community is the legendary BLACKWING 602 Faber Pencil... "Blackwing" sounds like a super hero, and in many ways it was... and is. It's the stuff of myth and magic, and if you read this blog, you know I love a good story.

This one has a happy ending... after many years of no Blackwings... it has been resurrected and is now commercially available again. Has anyone tried the new "Palomino" Blackwings???

(UPDATE Nov 28th -- I HAVE JUST ADDED 1 NEW POST & LINKS TO SEVERAL OF THE ARTISTS FEATURED IN THESE POSTS) Only 3 years old... CTNX has become the premiere animation event. This year featured more exclusive guests... and SOLD OUT panels and programs.....

The exhibit hall was the largest yet with all the spaces sold out... amazing for such a young show, but obviously the demand is there!
Around the convention you could enjoy free demos of traditional hand-drawn animation...
and demos of computer animation...
Artists appreciated the free live model workshops....I love seeing the models in all their different costumes & poses! So creative...
There was so much programming for the attendees to enjoy.. the hard part was trying to decide what to see!
The live drawing demo stage was always busy... and the overhead screens allow everyone to see the drawings in progress... not just those in the front row.
The screen also provided reminders about more programming not to miss, like the RalphMcQuarrie gallery!
In the lobby area, there were impromptu portfolio reviews by attending pros....
So much action going on... with an oversized Incredible Hulk overseeing it all!
Look at the long list of workshops and artist panels... all SOLD OUT!

CTNX 2011 - Sketchtravel debut & signing with 10 contributors!

The fates smiled on all of us... and thanks to a terrific effort by so many involved... the US Debut of Sketchtravel exceeded expectations....

The line-up was outstanding.. and all the artists were great sports! R to L below you can see Lorelay Bove, Eli Harris, Benoit Le Pennec (and that guy in the aloha shirt, Stuart Ng ;)
The fans were thrilled....the line-up continued with (R to L) Benoit, Bill Plympton, Peter de Seve, Charles Solomon (writer), Paul Felix, Robert Valley, James Jean and Catia Chien...
It was quite a crowd on both sides of the table... the signing happened during the last hour the exhibit hall was opened.
What a night to remember! Everyone was so understanding... especially the attendees who were waiting in line.. OUTSIDE! I was the one handing them chocolates once we finally got everyone inside. In spite of the late start, we got the signing wrapped up after about an hour, for a champagne toast courtesy of CTNX, and time for the artists and attendees to mingle...

During the signing and party, we're running around like only we can at team SNB. Because the exhibition hall closed at 7PM, the lights dimmed to kick off CNTX @Nite.... which included the signing area, so I only caught these few pictures myself. I managed to have a really fun, too brief chat about our Pres Romanillos Sketchbook with CTNX guest artist Carlos Grangel who stopped by for the Sketchtravel signing and party. Sorry, no picture, but what a nice guy! Stuart and Mary were taking care of the artists and attendees at the signing, and I had to return to our booth, which was still open during the signing... and needed to be shut down after the hall closed for the night. It takes a team... and some of us are behind the scenes :)

CTNX 2011 - Regis Loisel

Many SNB patrons enjoy the art of Regis Loisel... including his "Peter Pan" series... vols 1 & 2 where translated into English, but the rest of the series is only available in French....

Losiel himself was available to meet fans at CTNX! He was making his exclusive US appearance at CTNX 2011, and stopped by our booth while he was there...
We helped out at one of his CTNX signings.. where he delighted the crowd with large, accomplished sketches in the style typical of European signings...

Our booth was located just on the other side of this wall... an ideal set-up to service the signings.

I'm a fan of artist Terryl Whitlatch!

She was a fun guest at our signing at the SNB showroom in Torrance, where she graced our drawing board with this wonderful addition (and you can see pics from that signing at Dec 17 2010 post here on the blog):
At CTNX 2011 she made several panel and signing appearances. Here she is at work at the live demo stage....

In spite of the crowds, it's amazing to see the artists so focused on their work...

CTNX 2011 SNB Booth

This import book is a wordless comic about the day in the life of a Tiger who can't catch a break (or any prey)... amazing art (and an ironic twist at the end)....
The Ben Caldwell sketchbooks were a big hit with the CTNX crowd....

We've been exhibiting at CTNX since the 1st year in 2009... and were delighted to be back again this year. Thanks to organizer and CTN Founder Tina Price for setting us up with 3 booths and an ideal location in the hall to serve the guest artists & CTNX attendees. Below in the blur of action-speed, you can see Stuart in the aloha shirt, and our newest team member Matthew in red, assisting at the signing for Regis Loisel:

We debuted many items at our booth from our French shipment... and these two special items. Our own publication of the Pres Romanillos Sketchbook (new post here on the blog about this book). Here's my snap of the first patron to purchase one at our booth:
We also debuted a new print by Peter de Seve of a happy cat with a gift wrapped mouse. The print is titled "Go Ahead, Open it"....purchased by this smiling patron who said the cat looked just like her's...

Our 3 booths against the far wall, between 2 doors, was an ideal spot for us:

One of the benefits of our booth is that when you wander in, you can almost guarantee there will be an artist of note also visiting the booth... can you spot one below?
That's right! Here a lucky patron gets his just purchased copy of the Eric Goldberg "Character Animation Crash Course" book ....signed by the artist himself, who just happened to be shopping at our booth!
Stuart doesn't get away from our booth often... so we're lucky that so many of our artist friends stop by or are set up near our location... Pic below (by Matthew K) hows the rows of tables and booths near us..

Long-time pal William Stout stopped by. Among his selections was the imported "Jungle Book"... one of the most popular items at our booth and a real show-stopper. Creaturebox creators Dave Guertin and Greg Baldwin shopped our booth between their CTNX appearances and shared the news that they are working on a new book. We'll have it as soon as it's available. Greg also picked up the "Jungle Book" import. It's inspiring to be in the company of so many of our artist friends! We had fun neighbors on the exhibit floor too.. including a large display from Gentle Giant studios, featuring a little Pixar rat that I'm quite fond of... can you spot him?
And that giant "Hulk" that loomed over the crowd during the show. The Gentle Giant crew let us get this fun shot w/ him during tear-down.
So why is there never anyone from SNB at the evening events and wrap party??? Man, we'd love to... and CTNX @ Nite is a unique perk of this show.... but our booth takes a lot to close out at the end of the day.. and to open in the morning and tear down under deadline on Sunday night..... so your crew is here serving you beyond the the exhibit hall posted hours. Rest assured while we can't be at the parties in person, we're with you in spirit :) Note in photo below how the booths around us are all empty... and we're still there. Packing the books with care takes time... complicated by a damp (but at least not raining) night for load out... The challenge of load-out is just part of what it takes to bring books to a convention...
It takes muscle...and heart... mostly from Stuart himself, his brother Steve, and our band of real friends (they sort who will help you move books on a rainy night) to make the magic happen all for YOU! We build the shelves, box and unbox the books, so you can see them and make the best selection for your needs. Exhibiting at shows is fun.... but it's also a grind that only those of us behind the scenes can really appreciate. Why do we do it? It's a service we provide to you.... and it's your support that keeps us going....
Plus coffee... and snacks... and sometimes extra-yummy muffins brought to us by a fellow exhibitor (thanks again, Brianne :)... and even homemade marshmallows (Beth S :)

CTNX 2011 - Pres Romanilllos Sketchbook Debut (updated Dec 9 with link to SNB)

We don't publish many sketchbooks ourselves... so when we do, there is a story behind it. This one is very special to me...
We are so honored to be trusted with this legacy project, for a talented artist who is no longer with us.
The charm, life and love in these drawings just leap off the page at you. The more you look, the more you learn....
I did not know Pres, but he was greatly admired by his colleagues, and it's easy to see why in the drawings that survive him.....
I'm so grateful to our wonderful friend Susan Goldberg, who suggested us as a way to publish and share these drawings with the world. Take this book home ... you'll cherish it, and so many things in your life.... Lots of great lessons here!

Your Science Lesson for Today - 2011 celebrates Marie Curie & Intl Year of Chemistry! (UPDATED Nov 14)

UPDATE NOV 14th: Just saw the play "Radiance: the passion of Marie Curie" at the Geffen Playhouse. Please see this if you can... it's such a wonderful live theater experience

The theater itself is cozy and adds to the intimacy of looking at the real people behind the historical figures. Of course, I couldn't take pics at the performance, but above is the ext of the Geffen Playhouse, and below is the main lobby:

At this production on the stage of the smaller of the 2 interior theaters, the use of lights and projections to make one simple area into many different settings is really impressive. As a huge fan of the Marie Curie story, it was so much fun to see this historical heroes come to life... and to consider the choices made by author Alan Alda about what to focus on .. and what to leave out. Performances run through Dec .. just EXTENDED to Dec 18th! more info at www.geffenplayhouse.com

Kolonie artists Hanenberger & Schellewald sign at SNB Nov 5, 2011

If you were one of the lucky patrons to visit our showroom Nov 5th, you got to see artists Christian Schellewald (left) and Patrick Hanenberger (center) ....

Stuart is on the right... all 3 are wearing exclusive "Kolonie" hand-screened t-shirts. Patrick and Christian stopped by to sign our stock of their book "Kolonie: the Forgotten Empire"

They signed the limited edition hardcover with sketches... and the trade paperback with a distinctive rubber stamp for each artist along with their signature...

Get Inspired - the story of a book (SKETCHTRAVEL), part 1 (NOW WITH VIDEO)

I've discussed before here on the blog how horses inspire and challenge artists. It's a theme that resonates very strongly with me because I love stories about what inspires the best in people. This post is part one of a story that involves artists and a VERY SPECIAL BOOK, over 4 years in the making... and its journey isn't over yet....(the book isn't about horses, I just like this image of partnership :) NOW IT CAN BE TOLD.. the book is SKETCHTRAVEL!

There is a story behind every book in our inventory. A book can inspire creativity.... even a journey. I've seen people gasp with delight when I put a book in their hands. I hear the story of how they've searched for years for the book... and I tell them what I can about the copy we have. People tell me their frustrations when an out-of-print book is eluding them. I can assure them from experience that there is hope. My mantra is: "Your copy will find you." I've seen it happen... and when we get to be part of that moment, it's a great feeling to provide that service.

Whatever your occupation or interest......we're all at our best when what we "do" allows us to help others.

Family Fun - Model Train Show 2011 at South Coast Botanic Garden

We had a blast at the annual MODEL TRAIN SHOW...this is the 1st of 3 posts!

Fun for all ages at this event.... also great for sketching & photo reference! Plus the October date means many of the model train owners bring their Halloween decor (also to scale!).

This event is held at the South Coast Botanic Gardens on Crenshaw Blvd, just south of PCH and only a few miles from our Torrance showroom. Admission fee to the Garden includes the Train Show. Most of the elaborate scale model trains are set-up inside a building... but some of the trains are outside in the garden.

This is the entrance, you'll see it from the large (free) parking lot.

Once inside, there are lovely paths to wander ...

The botanic garden is not a park... but there are some gardens set aside for kids to discover..

It's a charming place to visit to enjoy the views and lush landscaping...
The walking paths are wide and wheelchair accessible... though there are hills and some rough patches...
Lots of color and majesty....
This patio near the entrance takes you to the train show....
You'll quickly feel like you're lost in time and space....
Adventure awaits!
Be sure to look closely...
You wouldn't want to miss the mermaid sunning herself on the rocks :)

Train show 2011, Live Wire Train Town

This is the 2nd of the 3 train posts.

Most of the set-ups are the work of train clubs... here's a sample..

The club members are enthusiastic and fun... and fascinating individuals with rich life stories. They are happy to answer your questions about the trains...
This club's trains run on electric current from the thin wires over the trains. The set-up re-creates the 1940s with all sorts of authentic details... and some quirky humor too. You could spend hours just taking photos and creating your own storyboards for a train tale....

The movie theater is playing "Streetcar Named Desire"...

Train show 2011, Halloween haunts

This is the 3rd of the 3 train posts...

Some of the set-ups specialized in the Halloween theme....

In spite of the spooky spook... this table was particularly kid-friendly, with a side table to press buttons and operate samples of working parts of the train set-ups... like a crossing gate...
The trains running at this station all had halloween-themed cars...

Near the entrance was this table with train t-shirts and magazines....

Yet another room featured this elabaorate train-scaled Halloween town..

Outside in the garden...you followed the path to the "G" scale trains...

Stuart and I attended the Mary Blair panel held Oct 20, 2011 at Motion Picture Academy. SNB team members Don & Matthew also attended.

My 3 Mary Blair posts are here to share the experience with you. Photos were NOT allowed at the event, so I've used Google images to add similar pictures where possible. I've also included links to clips on You Tube for the film clips that were shown or referred to during the panels.

Best known for her work on the "It's a Small World" ride at Disneyland, the 'art & flair of Mary Blair' (to borrow the title from John Canemaker's book) was a profound influence. Here's a You Tube clip that animates some Mary Blair Concept art:

Mary Blair Panel - family & colleague remember the person

The official title for this panel held on Oct 20, 2010 about Mary Blair is: "The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences presents The Marc Davis Celebration of Animation: Mary Blair's World of Color:a Centennial Tribute" Whew! Here's the cover image from the program:

The interior of the program was a list of the panelists and a copy of the essay about Mary Blair written by Lella Smith for the "Mary Blair: A Life's Choice, A Mother's Job" in Tokyo. Ms. Smith is the Creative Director of the Walt Disney Animation Studio's Animation Research Library.

Here's info also included in the program:

"The Marc Davis Celebration of Animation was established in 1994 to provide a forum for established film animators and other experts in the craft to share their expertise as well as explore with their colleagues the challenges of creating animation for the screen. The lecture is named in honor of the man who gave life to characters as diverse as Brer Rabbit, the beautiful Cinderella, Alice (of Wonderland fame), Tinkerbell, and the delightfully wicked Cruella De Vil." The first panel was with special guests Alice Davis (left), a costume designer at Disney, and Maggie Ricchardson (right), a niece of Blair (photos were not allowed at the panel.. this image is from Google images):

The women shared their recollections of Mary Blair the person, as well as the artist. They both admired Blair's tremendous sense of personal style. Alice stated that Mary Blair was the type of woman who could have gone shopping at the Salvation Army, but with her way of carrying herself and styling her outfit, she would have made the ensemble look like it had come from Saks Fifth Avenue. Blair was known for her designer clothes and perfume. Her niece recalled how Mary Blair wore capes! (and she didn't know anyone else, then or now, who wore capes).

While Blair is known for her design sense and color selection, in fact she had poor eyesight. Perhaps this shaped her design and artistic senses as well. Both women recalled Blair's habit of wearing several pairs of eyeglasses, each with a different colored frame, stacked on top of her nose. Blair even had a special pair of glasses where each lens could be flipped up independently so she would see though one lens while she applied her eye make-up to the eye with the flipped up lens.

Mary Blair was good at poker. She loved horses and took her nieces to the race track at Santa Anita. Once she bought Maggie's sister a toy doll at the track, which the girl named "Anita" after the race track: a story that did not sit well with the teacher at show and tell.

Alice urged Maggie to share the story of "the Christmas presents." Every year, Maggie's family would wonder if "Aunt Mary" would ever give them a toy or other traditional present instead of "another painting." And the children always wondered why Blair signed each work... they all knew the picture was from Aunt Mary. Of course now these paintings are treasured family heirlooms, but not quite so impressive at the time to young children.

Blair's research trip to South America with other Disney artists is created with an explosion of color and design in Blair's work. Both women witnessed this in both Blair's artwork, and her personal dress and home decor.

Blair understood the impact of color and design while working on "It's a Small World." Alice did much of the research for that project, and had to temper some of Blair's color choices as there were cases when the color that Blair wanted to use could have possibly offended the culture of the country (such as orange instead of brown bearskin hats for the guards at Buckingham Palace). Here is Alice Davis with one of the costumed dolls she researched:

Blair was humble... but she was valued by Disney, and she herself knew she was good. She was the only Disney artist allowed to sign her own work, and she signed everything. She was aware of national design styles such as the way the artists from certain countries were known for using shapes and colors. Perhaps animation is the true American national art form. Mary Blair's concept art brought a new dimension to the art of Disney and Disneyland that Walt Disney himself counted on Blair to contribute: a sense of whimsy.

After each panel, film clips were shown to illustrate Blair's work and influence. Mary Blair panel - influence on leading animation artists today

The second panel was a tribute to Mary Blair's influence, as this group of leading animation artist discussed the impact of her work on their careers (all photos from Google Images. Bios are from the panel program).

Pete Docter (Oscar winner for UP, and Oscar nominee for Toy Story and Wall-E, Monsters Inc, and Mike's New Car).

Susan Goldberg (Known for her color expertise, Susan served as art director on 2 segments from Fantasia/2000.) Pictured below on Right..

Eric Goldberg (on left) "Eric Goldberg served as the character designer and supervising animator for Genie in the animated feature Aladdin. His directing credits include Pocahontas as well as the "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Carnival of the Animals" segments in Fantasia/2000."

Michael Giaimo ("His many feature projects at Disney include his work as art director, character designer and visual development artist for Pocahontas and visual development artist for Home on the Range")

Daisuke "Dice" Tsutsumi (from "his start as a matte painter on the animated feature Ice Age, he rose to lead color key artist on Robots and Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears A Who. Since 2007 he has worked at Pixar... where he most recently served as an art director on Toy Story 3"). Dice is pictured below on left... with animation master Hayao Miyazaki on right..... collaborators on Dice's Sketchtravel project.....

Dice started as a classically trained, academic painter. His approach to Blair revealed how she used her skills as an artist to deliver emotional impact. He explained that Blair had the ability to simplify color.... she made things look colorful by using FEWER colors. (think about this for a while...then re-examine some her images and see how it's there..)

Several of the artists spoke about Blair's ability to communicate a story point on a emotional level through her color choices.

Blair was a modernist... and she brought that sensibility to the Disney style and her contemporaries at the studio. She wasn't the only modernist (Eyvind Earle etc)... but she brought more than a graphic identity to her assignments. She understood lighting and shape. She's known for her extreme colors, but she used them to create world and characters that were credible and appealing. Her toolbox included pattern, order, curved lines... and most of all a stylized use of color to reveal emotions. All these elements are on display in the Disney Short "Once Upon a Wintertime" (on you tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGcbMroVtEE)

This is one of the few projects where Mary Blair's character designs were animated.. not just used as concept art. This short was referenced a lot during the panel... for the flashes of color to express the characters changing emotions. It also inspired the artists who worked on the "Rhapsody in Blue" sequence for Fantasia 2000 and were challenged by the task of animating curved line figures. Eric Goldberg was able to show his artists the Blair short and see how it can.. and HAD been done....

Another homage to Blair can be see in the "Colors of the Wind" sequence from Pocahontas... where color and shape are used to evoke a new way of looking at the word... a real place (Virginia in the time of the settlers).. but using Blair's techniques to make it more magical and emotional. Michael Giaimo spoke at length about this sequence.... and of the time he studied the "Blair Box" of original art from the Disney animation archives.

Even today... artists working at Disney reference the number of Mary Blair's originals that are in the Animation archives. Susan commented that she reviews lots of artist portfolios and there are many who can copy Blair, but few can capture her. In the Academy's video of the panel, Susan comments on Blair's color sense and references the "Little Train" clip that was screened. Here's a link to the clip on You Tube

Your Science Lesson for Today - Experium Science Academy in Torrance (NEW POST OCT 27th)

I'm such a science geek.... so I was super excited to attended sneak peek open house of K-8th grade Experium Science Academy on Hawthorne Blvd in Torrance. This BRAND NEW afterschool program is a hands-on lab environment... no tests or homework.. just an amazing opportunity to discover science (and perhaps a lifelong passion). When do the sessions for grown-ups start??? Please, please please... and put me on the waiting list for that!

The building is a circle and the 3 hands-on lab classrooms radiate out from the center area ...
This view of the Discovery lab for K-5th grade shows the overhead projection system that will be in all the lab classes. Like a cooking demo..... students will be able to see everything on the teacher's lab table projected overhead.. and also viewable at their lab station via touch screens..

This interactive lab for grade schoolers is a space for them to get curious & excited about science ... as young as kindergarten!
The first room you reach after the lobby is this "way station" to drop off your backpack and pick up your lab coat. Instantly makes you feel smarter, right? (and I like the subtle message that this is fun, but also serious... safety first).
The Chemistry lab is the 3rd lab area...

Red stuff.. cool... what is it anyway??? Makes you wonder and want to find out, doesn't it???
In pic below of the chem lab you can see Dr. Nyberg in his lab coat on the left. He has a PhD.. and he's a stand up comedian. I gave him my Chemistry Song as a welcoming gift.... maybe it will make it into the act someday. Meanwhile, I hope I get to see the experiment he told us about that hooked him on the study of really cold things... his professor dipped his gloved hand into a freezing solution, pulled his hand out... and smashed the fingers off (turns out the professor had pulled back his fingers into the glove and let the solution just freeze the glove). That's science that makes an impression isn't it???
The chem lab has the best garden views.... why ever leave??
Science is all around us. It's the stuff of life... (and plastic.. and rocks)...and we need to understand it, explore it and appreciate it. Why be baffled or intimidated by it? There are always new and better ways to make friends with science... and other subjects that are traditionally "hard." Take another look....

SNB at Dream-Con Oct 2011 - post updated 10/17 with artist links

Stuart and I don't just love books.... we also love koi and koi ponds....

A neighbor near us spent about a year constructing and establishing a koi poi in his front yard.....there's a koi pond at the Japanese garden near the Torrance main library... and when we travel we love to visit koi ponds. They are such a relaxing, inspiring place to be....Here's one of our favorites...
It's known as "the Lagoon" on the beautiful grounds of the Dreamworks Animation studios...
Where we joined the artists attending and exhibiting at the 4th Annual Dream-Con, organized by the lovely and gracious Angela L and her team at Dreamworks Artistic Development.
Here's the outdoor patio area where the exhibitors were set-up....
Dream-Con is a private convention where Dreamworks Animation artists can display some of their personal artwork and projects. There is original art.... merchandise.. photography.. prints.. even puppets.. all on view! Our pal Donnachada Daly (his sketchbook "Crush" is still one of my all-time favorites) was there with his newest book: 3-D Doodle Pad. You can see more of his work on his very inspiring blog http://www.thedalyblog.com/ And check out his list of links. If you look at a few every day, it would be like taking a workshop or seminar. Once again... another accomplished artist who is drawing everyday & looking at all sorts of sources... see a pattern? :)
Nicolas Weis' table featured charming originals of dragons. He also had on his table a sample working sketchbook of his that was "free to browse." OMG it was something to see the calibre of work on every page. Breathtaking! A working sketchbook like this is typical of all the great artists. They get really great because they carry these sketchbooks around with them and fill page after page with spontaneous sketches.....but wow......Nicolas's drawings were really amazing! Here's link for his website (http://www.nicolasweis.com/). He works a lot in ink made from walnuts (already sounds magical, doesn't it?). The medium is unforgiving, but he is willing to take the risk. As a result, his art expresses a depth of beauty that comes from embracing a process that can't be controlled. Kismet happens when ink meets water. Instead of fighting it, Nicolas channels it as a creative partner. Just take a look at the crab image on his website :)
A film crew was at Dream con and stopped to talk w/ Nicolas. His work is also featured in the "Moonshine" book... and you can see him in the 5-minute Dreamworks documentary (see next post).
Dream-con's hours were from 3-6 PM... so as the working day wound down, the crowds grew. It was fun to hear the artists chatting about their personal work with their colleagues...
The large color photographs by Joshua Gunther at the table next to us got a lot of attention...He was explaining his photography technique behind the saturated colors in his pictures... and their unique, ready-to-hang format...

Stuart enjoyed catching up with the many artists who stopped by our table. Mary and Matthew from Team SNB where also there... which allowed Stuart to get away from the table from time to time and visit the other exhibitors (and of course.. find some new books that will be on our website soon).
Our 3 tables at Dream-con allowed us to bring a wide variety of books Stuart hand-selected for this event.
Studios like Dreamworks are quite clever to provide "on-campus" benefits to their busy artists. At Dreamworks we also saw posters for upcoming lectures, demos and screenings on campus. The whole environment is creative, with amenities like a game room, the koi pond, and a dazzling and delicious cafeteria. Just imagine the sort of hours it takes to make movies.... especially animated movies. It's smart of the studios to have these sorts of services on-site. With the crunch of production schedules... the artists can't always take advantage of all the activities...which is why we were even more delighted to see so many attending Dream-Con...

Marcos Mateu-Mestre stopped by ... and signed copies of our stock of his popular book "Framed Ink." We also had copies of the new book by Christian Schellewald...."Kolonie: The Forgotten Frontier." Christian's previous book is the popular LA<>SF sketchbook. Christian's co-author for the new book is Patrick Hanenberger. Here's pic of Christian signing his books:

Stuart has just returned from APE (Alternative Press Expo) in San Francisco. This convention is devoted to self-published and independent comics. Here's this year's program cover:

This cool book prints complete sketchbook pages... stunning, spontaneous work...

The "ROUND ROBIN" vol 2 is a personal favorite of mine. vol 1 was featured on the blog (see post 11/29/10). The cover for vol 2 is the plain brown paper, I added the postcard of theirs on the top...

And here's a hidden gem Stuart discovered at this show: The Business of Monkeys. Tip to artists: PUT YOUR NAME ON THE COVER OF YOUR SKETCHBOOK.. AND YOUR EMAIL OR WEBSITE ON THE BACK. Make it easy for people associate your name with your art :) Your book's front and back covers are like business cards... make sure your NAME & contact info is right there with these important samples of your art!
There's lots of variety in this book... in most ways, it's a great example of a successful sketchbook.

Get Inspired - Mary Blair panel w/ leading animation artists at AMPAS

You don't have to be a an Oscar nominee.. or even a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS).... to attend many of their educational events and programs. The Academy also posts video clips of many of their lectures. Thursday, Oct 20th @ 7:30 PM features a discussion on one of our favorite artists: Mary Blair.

Featuring Pete Docter, Michael Giaimo, Eric Goldberg, Susan Goldberg and Daisuke "Dice" Tsutsumi.

Panel moderated by animation critic and historian Charles Solomon.

The unmistakably bold and colorful designs of Mary Blair (1911-1978) continue to inspire and influence artists in all areas of animation today.

Although Mary Blair is perhaps best known for the design of Disneyland's "it's a small world" attraction and park murals, her concept artwork for "Cinderella," "Alice in Wonderland" and "Peter Pan" in the 1950s, as well as for earlier short subjects, reflects her unique sensibility and lasting influence on animation.

The panelists will not only celebrate Blair's work as an artist and stylist, but will also show examples and discuss how her work has influenced their own.

Scheduled panelists include:

PETE DOCTER, a director who received the 2009 Oscar for Animated Feature Film for "Up" and was nominated for Original Screenplay for "Up," "WALL-E" and "Toy Story," Animated Feature Film for "Monsters, Inc." and Animated Short Film for "Mike's New Car."

MICHAEL GIAIMO, a character designer for "The Brave Little Toaster" and "FernGully: The Last Rainforest," as well as the art director for "Pocahontas" and a visual development artist for "Home on the Range."

ERIC GOLDBERG, the supervising animator for the Genie in "Aladdin," Phil in "Hercules" and Rabbit in "Winnie the Pooh." He was also the director of "Pocahontas" and the "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Carnival of the Animals" segments of "Fantasia/2000."

SUSAN GOLDBERG, the art director for the "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Carnival of the Animals" sequences in "Fantasia/2000" and an assistant animator on "Pocahontas," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Hercules."

DAISUKE "DICE" TSUTSUMI, the lead color key artist on "Robots," the lead color designer for "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!" and the art director on "Toy Story 3."

Had so much fun exhibiting at October 2010 Anaheim Twilight convention. My 10/10/10 post "Hillywood Show meets Wendling Desk" is the 2nd most-viewed post on the blog! I won't be exhibiting at the LA show in Nov..... but can I resist attending???? The Twilight fan world is uber-girlie and literate. Of course there are the movie fans who swoon over the actors.... but there are also panels with PhD professors looking at the Twilight phenomenon from an academic perspective. Most of the conventions in our circle are designed for fanboys and that's fine, but it's also fun to be at a girl-power show. Best of all, the Twilight conventions are hosted by The Hillywood Show.. known for their amazing parodies. i LOVE the Hindi sisters! So much talent... and so gracious...talk about inspiring.

Bronze animals by Eric Berg (NEW POST OCT 16)

Look twice.....this is NOT a real dog :)

It's a bronze sculpture by artist Eric Berg (www.bergbronze.com). Follow web address for more fun bronze animals.... Website includes some images of works in progress.

He must be a dog person as he has an eye for the details for specific breeds, such as the Vizsla above and this collie...

Who is Lassie?

Lassie is a sculpture of the main character of the book,Lassie Come-Home. Lassie can be found in the Pfundt Sculpture Garden. In 1995, the Museum commissioned a bronze life-size sculpture of Lassie. Through a selection process, noted animal sculptor Eric Berg was chosen by the Museum's collections committee to create Lassie. The finished work of art was first installed in the Michener Art Museum's Sculpture Garden on April 13, 1997.

About Eric Berg
Eric Berg, renowned animal sculptor, initially studied business, earning a bachelor's degree from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in 1968. Upon graduation, he decided to engage his love of animals through the study of art and entered the MFA program at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his degree in 1974.

Other commissions created by Eric Berg include a sea turtle installed at the New Jersey State Aquarium in Camden and Massa the Gorilla at the Philadelphia Zoo. "Philbert," the grandest of all piggy banks, is at the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.

Berg grew up in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, attended The Hill School, then moved with his family to Allentown. Now he lives in Philadelphia, but spends several months a year at his farm in Chautauqua County, New York. He is a member of the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums and an officer on the executive board of the society of Animal Artists.

Berg discovered his affinity for animal sculptures as a child and as a college student gave away hand-hewn stone animal carvings as gifts. His sculptures are permanently installed at Everglades National Park, Royal Palm, Florida; the Please Touch Museum and the Museum of Natural History in Philadelphia; and Museums as far away as Colorado, Virginia, Texas and New Mexico.

Bronze Animals, Lazy Daisy Cafe & Oscar's home in Beverly HIlls (POST UPDATED 10/23)

Stuart and I were at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for the Mary Blair panel on Oct 20th. Here's the exterior of the Academy building:

We also found a wonderful little cafe on Wilshire.. right across the street.. perfect for a casual bite to eat! It's called the Lazy Daisy Cafe and I highly recommend it.

After our meal, we walked around the neighborhood. Los Angeles isn't known as a pedestrian friendly city... which is a shame as there are lots of lovely neighborhoods (not just Beverly Hills)... and you never know what you might miss when you drive everywhere.... like a tall giraffe among the palm trees...

Here's the sight that made us cross the street. Yep... it's a front yard full of life-sized bronze wildlife...

THE 4 R's at SNB -- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle -- AND REMEMBER

At last.. here's the post about the remodel at our showroom. We are big on re-using items... and we re-purpose whenever we can. The fixtures in our showroom may look brand new, but in fact, nearly all are second-hand. I love that they came to us with a backstory and are continuing a new chapter with us...

Our previous location on Crenshaw Blvd was much smaller... so one of our early challenges was creating display space. Stuart purchased 2nd-hand metal shelving from a medical library... but look closely... and you'll see that the display "tables" are actually used office desks. The main display table in front was always covered with books... so no one knew it was really a used conference table top, propped up on boxes! Resourceful Stuart Ng learned early on from reading "Little Orphan Annie" comics: "Learn to use what you have got, and you won't need what you have not."
Here's another sample table top we used to display books:
And here's our showroom now... where we are remembering our beloved Borders stores. Our books are nestled happily on used fixtures purchased during the recent wave of Borders store closings. Decades ago, the big chains started with Crown books... Barnes & Nobles and Borders soon followed, and drove out a lot of independent stores. The big chains were the bad guys then... but now they are the wounded giants who smote the small stores, but were cut down by the new big girl on the block: Amazon. So what will happen to Amazon? We'll just have to see where the story goes......

Meanwhile, here you see the front of the Borders triangle displays...
Here they are from the back... facing towards the front door. The books here were previously all displayed on used office desks. The desks have gone on to new jobs... and we've welcomed our "new" fixtures...

We've always had the books... and now YOU can really see them. Our 2nd hand metal shelves, glass display cabinet, desks, wooden flat files, and these Borders fixtures are all ways we combine our love for books with our habit of re-using. Hey, we're older than we look and we like old stuff. You learn over time that the old stuff has character, patina.. and often lasts longer than something new. Like Indiana Jones said: "It's not the years kid; it's the mileage."
