Angouleme 2020 (4 of 5) -- restaurants and respites

My survival-level French has improved to the point where I'm more comfortable getting around. Basic things like going out to eat and taking public transportation can be daunting when you can't read the signs or ask for directions.

Even when my French was at its worst, I always found that my attempts to communicate in French first were appreciated. I was rewarded with help, and often in English. Restaurants are a good place to practice language skills. There is consistent vocabulary. Pointing and gestures will communicate a lot. Most staff in touristy areas are used to travelers.

Delicious dinner at this Pakistani/Indian restaurant...

Coffee and desserts at a cafe in the city center...

We had another delicious dinner at the Atlas restaurant...

Grab-and-go sandwiches are at another level in France. Yumm!!!
This little mom-and-pop stand is always popular...

This chain has long lines at lunchtime...
Many of the local restaurants had specials for the Festival...
and artist drawings in their windows..
Walking around the city is a good way to work off all the fantastic food...

The three crosses on the hillside below are part of a WWI memorial.
