art in action -- "How to ally" artist Maureen "Marzi" Wilson collaboration with writer Marie Beecham

Covid crisis and Black Lives Matter have inspired many examples of artists in action.

Here is an artist  in action series from Maureen "Marzi" Wilson (aka "Introvert Doodles") She collaborated with author Marie Beecham in a series of 9 posts shared by Marzi on her "Introvert Doodles" Facebook in June 7-15, 2020.

The 9 days of text with images here are all from Marzi's page. Notice how she credits her collaborator Marie and posts links to Marie's pay platforms.

Art is never FREE. Art is valued now more than ever. Look at all the ways the public is proving this. Now is the time to connect followers with ways to support the artWORK they depend on to "like" and share.

"Day 1 My friends, it’s time to ask ourselves some hard questions. Over the next week, I’ll be sharing doodles created in collaboration with Waste-Free Marie. These are based on her brilliant “How To Be An Ally” post. If you find this series helpful, please consider compensating her for her work. Venmo: MarieBeecham PayPal: PayPal.Me/MarieBeecham
Day 2 I believe that feelings are important and worth examining. But keep this in mind: Black people shouldn’t be responsible for comforting US because we feel bad about THEIR pain. Apologies can be nice to hear, but change goes a lot farther. Channel your feelings into action πŸ’•

Day 3 The “How To Ally” collab with Waste-Free Marie continues ❤️ These conversations are hard. They can bring up feelings of defensiveness or anger, and it’s uncomfortable to have them directed at you. Recognize that this is further proof that prejudice is still rampant, and let it commit you further to standing against it. We cannot fear these conversations while black people fear for their lives.

Day 4 of the “How To Ally” collab with Waste-Free Marie πŸ˜Š I get it: you have a genuine question. You want to know more so you can do better, and that’s awesome. But think about how exhausting it must be to explain the same concepts day after day. Instead, seek out answers in already-available content by black creators; subscribe to their channels, buy their books, consider signing up for a workshop joining their Patreon, etc. πŸ’•

Day 5 of 9 collaborative “How To Ally” doodles! As I’ve learned more about black American history, I’ve come to a better understanding of just how slow and superficial change has been. It seems like “progress” always comes with caveats and loopholes. It’s past time for real, significant change.

Day 6 of “How To Ally” collab with Waste-Free Marie πŸ’• There are times when “I know exactly how you feel” misses the mark. If you haven’t personally experienced the daily toll of racism, then you DON’T understand how it feels. Perhaps “I can’t imagine how that must feel” is a more appropriate phrase. Let’s put our compassion to work as a force for change ❤️

Day 7 This “How To Ally” tip by @wastefreemarie has been on my mind since I first read it. I like stickers, both receiving them and giving them. And there are scenarios where that’s okay... but not when it comes to demonstrating respect and basic human decency. We should do the right thing simply because it’s right... right?
On that note, I feel I was mistaken when I posted individual thank-you doodles for a recent fundraiser. While it makes sense for me to post thank-you doodles for my own Patreon, in retrospect, I don’t feel it was appropriate for this fundraiser. It was the equivalent of me handing out ally stickers... and it definitely wasn’t my place to do so. Thanks for your patience as I learn πŸ’•

Day 9 Final doodle in the “How To Ally” collab with Waste-Free Marie πŸ’• Our reflexive reaction when we’re called out is often defensiveness or anger. Navigating those feelings requires deliberate intention. Pause. Breathe. Reflect. Trust that the person speaking is the expert in their own life experiences. View this as an opportunity, not a threat. Listen. Lean in. Learn. ❤️

A huge thank you to Marie for her wise words and guidance! If you found value in these doodles, please consider supporting Marie’s work. Venmo: MarieBeecham PayPal: PayPal.Me/MarieBeecham Patreon: patreon.com/wastefreemarie/"
