"How to Hire an Illustrator" guide by Abigail Roscoe, Coyote Studio

JANUARY 2026 UPDATE

Due to ongoing health concerns, I've taken a long sabbatical from the blog. I hope to resume sometime in 2026, but since it's been so long since I posted anything, I wanted to check in with these updates. I'm grateful I was able to travel with Stuart in early 2025 as that was the peak time of good health. The challenges that followed starting in April 2025 have kept me close to home. As some of you know, I have had Type 1 diabetes for over 50 years. The last few years I've had some complications. Some age related. Some from this chronic condition. It's all manageable, but it takes more out of me than it did decades ago. I'm still very lucky compared to many who suffer with greater burdens. In the end, we all have to find the grace to deal with what comes our way. And respect the boundaries we need to stay healthy. Writing this blog since 2008 has been a great joy in my life. Hopefully you'll see more posts later this year. Meanwhile, the posts here on copyright issues and Indie Artist life continue to be good resources even as changes on these fronts are rapid. Protect your IP! Aloha and a bientot.

May 2025 post resumes here ---

Art in action. Educating fans. Raising awareness. Everyone who posts their photos and text online has intellectual property rights at risk. Why are personal online posts subject to unauthorized commercial use by others? Or used without credit, consent or compensation to train AI datasets?

Protect YOUR rights. Hire real artists.
