The annual comics festival in Angouleme started in 1974 and is the largest comics event in Europe. https://www.angouleme-tourisme.com/en/agenda/les-festivals/festival-bd-angouleme/
You can find my previous posts about Angouleme in the February updates on the blog for 2009, 2012, 2015-17 and 2020.
Angouleme is a small city that's a 2-hour highspeed train ride from Paris or about an hour from Bordeaux. When the festival arrives, there's no convention center. Special tents (called the "bubbles") are set up around the town to house the exhibitors. The tents have themes/genres. The largest one has the major publishers of contemporary Bande Dessinee (hardcover comic books) where artists have signings. The four day festival increases the town's population by about 200,000. There aren't enough hotel rooms in the city to accommodate all the attendees and exhibitors. So local residents offer rooms at set rates .... and some attendees stay out of town and come in by train. (rooms may be available via sites like Air BnB these days... all new since we started attending nearly 20 years ago).
The Angouleme Hotel de Ville is not a hotel to stay at. It's a fortress-like city government building that dominates the city center. https://www.angouleme-tourisme.com/en/patrimoine-culturel/hotel-de-ville-angouleme/
I've featured it most years that I've posted about the festival. Here's a pic from this year's stay...
This year, the Angouleme Tourism Facebook page shared a video with views inside the Hotel. Here are some screen grabs from that video...
