https://www.notrealartconference.com/agenda

I haven't attended one of these conferences, so I can't speak from personal experience, but this sounds like a terrific Professional Development education opportunity for So Cal indie artists (perhaps with smaller crowds than a big comic con or Expo). The FAQ page gives details on ticket prices ($100-$150, but there is a discount price for students with ID). The FAQ page also cautions that parking at the conference venue is limited, so arriving via Lyft or Uber is recommended.

Art Theft Still A Chronic Problem

Online theft and unauthorized commercial use of images posted by indie artists continues to be a chronic problem. Here on the blog, I have been sharing links and updates about this issue since 2014. It's been going on longer than that, and while there are some victories for artists and better education for fans/consumers.... the fight is still ongoing, and exhausting, for the indie artist community.

This January 23, 2019 article by Nicole Nguyen from Buzzfeed News is the latest on this situation.
(image below by Susie Ghahremani... who is featured in the Buzzfeed article).

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/nicolenguyen/amazon-counterfeit-art-sellers-fakes-copyright-infringement?

From the article:

"The issue of stolen artwork on Amazon is widespread and well-known, but the company hasn’t addressed the infringement in a meaningful way. Fighting unauthorized use of artists’ original work on the site remains a constant battle. Though Amazon has a Brand Registry that allows Apple and other businesses to upload their trademarks and combat counterfeiting, independent creators who spoke to BuzzFeed News say the program doesn’t work for them — but they believe it should. Works of art are considered copyrighted goods and are not trademarks, like a brand name or logo, so artists don’t qualify for the “proactive brand protection” Amazon’s Brand Registry provides....

Independent artists say they spend hours filing takedown requests each month and lose thousands of dollars in the process each year."

There are many more posts and links here on the blog about this ongoing crisis for indie art life:

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

After all these years, going to the movies is still a treat. It's extra special these days, since many of the films are the work of artists who are friends and clients via Stuart's store. Best of all is when you get to see a film that reminds you why you fell in love with movies in the first place, because they take you to extraordinary worlds and on journeys with memorable characters who stay with you long after the lights come up.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a totally unexpected addition to that category.

Watching this film reminded me of 1999, when I went to see this...

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is exciting. Inventive. A game changer. Go see for yourself.

Quote from the Newsarama article: "One of the missions of LightBox Expo is to ensure that the artists in attendance, from students to professionals, will be respected and treated fairly. To that end, an advisory council has been created, made up of some of the most experienced artists and studio representatives in the business, including Stephen Silver (Kim Possible), Justin Goby Fields (Ironklad Studios), Helen Mingjue Chen (Wreck-it Ralph), Ryan Lang (Big Hero 6), Renee di Cherri (Adobe), Douglas Little (Wacom), Christophe Lautrette (Kung Fu Panda), alongside previously mentioned artists McCreery, McCaig, Ortiz and Loish. “We’re really proud of the Advisory Council and its impact on the event,” said Demonakos, the LBX Convention Director. “Their direction is helping us put together an experience like no other, including a professional development day on Friday, plus countless hours of programming to help artists no matter what stage they’re at in their career.”
